This article is screwed up and racist in so many ways. It's too bad you didn't do any research. It's okay. The New York Times makes stuff up too.
Comment By Rev. Dr. William H. Swann, 9-20-09Prof. Gier:
I read your rant with interest, I use the phrase rant because there is so little fact. Ron Wilson was a past Commander of the Son's of Confederate Veterans, that was I believe 5 years ago. The Son's of Confederate Veterans did go through a split when some members attempted an end run around long established policies and procedures and also played fast and loose with the Treasury's money.
None of that really matters though, since you connect everyone named Wilson with everyone and every organization that has a racist agenda, except the NAACP. While their agenda is also racist, it is somewhat different than the other groups you named.
I am the Chaplain for SCV Camp 2005 and if I read your rant correctly, that makes me either Michael Hills friends or one of the Rev. Wilson's conspirators? I don't know either gentleman, nor you for that matter, but I suspect they would demonstrate more courtesy towards you than you did them.
In conclusion, Sen. Trent Lott resigned because of a comment about Sen. Throm Thurmond run for the Presidency back in, I think, 1948 on the Dixiecrat ticket. Like most things it was an innocent comment that taken out of context made Sen. Lott look foolish at worst. Sen. Lott resigned for the good of the nation because focusing on him was to the detriment of the Country.
Checking facts is fairly easy on computers, I would have thought you would have thought of that?
Dear Mr. Swann,
Please forgive the tardy response here. The response function was not working for a while.
You accuse me of getting my facts wrong, but you do not point out a single error. I have done more research and recheck my facts and I have posted a revised version of the piece at http://www.home.roadrunner.com/~nickgier/TwoWilsons.htm
I was not able to find a John Wilkes Booth camp on the SCV website, so I deleted that paragraph. I have substituted the Lincoln/Booth T-shirt instead. Do you or any of your friends own one of these? Are they sold at any of your meetings?
The PDF of the 2008 SCV Constitution does not mention either the Pledge or the American flag. I did not have access to a previous version of it, so I was not able to confirm whether the Pledge and the Flag have been removed. In any case, I have also deleted that paragraph.
I have updated the SCV leadership and have found that Wilson's successors do indeed have neo-Confederate ties.
I made no claim that you know Doug Wilson or Michael Hill. In fact I made no claims about you at all! Michael Hill is the founder of the LOS and LOS members have played a large role in the SCV. That is all that I'm claiming and the facts are very clear.
Thank you for the dialogue.
Nick Gier
