According to a Monday Gallup Poll, Wyoming is in a tie with Mississippi for the most conservative state in the nation.
Nudging it into noteworthy territory are the 53 percent of those polled who are self-described conservatives.
The Equality State has historically been solidly red in terms of its election results—both statewide and nationally, of course.
A separate poll conducted by the Casper Star-Tribune and the Washington D.C.-based Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. further probed partisanship, asking residents about their approval of Barack Obama, the direction of the country and health care reform.
As far as support for the president, the results (52 percent said Obama’s doing “poor job”) surprised even Brad Coker, a representative for Mason-Dixon, who told the Tribune, “I don’t think Bill Clinton ever got that bad in Wyoming.”
But that doesn’t mean disapproval is unanimous by any means. Nancy Henderson of Aladdin told the paper that although “a lot of things seem to be rammed down our throats…I still think he’s a very good man.”
A mere 27 percent of those polled declared their support for the proposed reform and more particularly its provision requiring the purchase of health insurance for most Americans. Residents also expressed marked concern for the bill’s pricetag.
Roughly 82 percent of polled Republicans and 68 percent of polled Independents expressed dissatisfaction with the country as a whole. Congress came under particular attack.
Republican Charley Smith of Lander told the Star Tribune that his fellow party members have “done everything they could do to destroy him, to destroy his character, attack him personally.” His answer to the mud-slinging? “If you’re concerned about the things in the president’s agenda, come up with a better idea. And I’m not hearing an exchange of ideas—I’m only hearing an attack.”
Joyce Campbell of Powell has another solution, which she suggested to report Jeremy Pelzer of the Star Tribune. “If we had a clean sweep in Congress—get rid of every one of them—I think that’s what they need.”
Opinion polls are mostly influenced by massive propaganda campaigns that usually distort the truth and have mostly emotional appeal and very few of those being polled are familiar with the details of the issue. Try to run the country by polls and we would be a lot worse off than we already are. There's way to much money and bullshit used to form public policy as it is.
Comment By Dewey, 8-04-10Well...we finally found the magic formula that let you use 'Wyoming' and 'Mississippi' in the same sentence...
Comment By jedediah, 8-04-10Mick knows bullshit.
Comment By Jay Greene, 8-04-10They are also among the most pedestrian, benighted and anti-intellectual states, I think.
Comment By Ted, 8-05-10I'm just glad my state of Idaho is finally out of that discussion; at least for now. Now Wyoming gets to be the "deep south" of the Rocky Mountains.
Comment By Mickey Garcia, 8-05-10Don't be too sure. If you watched the Idaho Repulsican Convention, there was a lot of Red Neck, nut case, the South shall rise again, separatists running around, who were pretty much in charge of place.
Comment By Amable, 8-05-10It willl come as no surprise, and, quite to the contrary, will come as a welcome honor for most of the residents of my state, Wyoming, to be polled and considered equals to Mississippi in ANY category. Indeed, the only surprise [disappointment] might be that they do not equal Mississippi in being the most ignorant and racist of states in the union.
I fight a daily battle with all sorts of forwarded/forwarded/forwarded, ad-infinitum emails that proport to be tracing the facts on one issue or another in the political realm, but not always on that topic. My own "objective" polling or tally of these is that at least 75 to 80 percent have inaccurate and sometimes cleverly constructed and integrated with a smattering of truth, outright LIES about something or another directly aimed at President Barack Obama and his "pointy-headed" liberal cronies. My goal is to simply reply [to all, if possible] the actual facts, gleaned from such reliable sources as factcheck.org, snopes.com, and yes, even the most right winged media I can find, [all with multiple references as resources themselves] none of my bias is included in my rebuttals, bias which might include the fact that I supported Barack Obama, campaigned [though for my own safety and that of my family] covertly in some cases, sent the maximum amount of money, legally, to his campaign fund, etc. In most cases, the responses I get are along the lines such as "f**k " off nigger lover" or "we know where you live" or "move back home"...I am in fact, HOME, and have been for over 50 years, a rancher, voter, tax payer [I sent a personal check to the IRS some years back for over 6 figures from an investment I'd held through all shorts of ups and downs for many years!], and contributor to the community in many ways.] These emails are most disturbing when I consider that the younger people of our state of Wyoming are being influenced and their anger and bias stoked by these incendiary remarks about town and even in the "balanced" journalism we receive. NO ONE wants to check the facts, the latest being that any insurance payments received under what they love to call "Obamacare" will be TAXED ON YOUR NEXT RETURN--SURPIRSE FOLKS. This, along with dozens and dozens of other lies like this--i.e., that all YOUR GUNS WILL HAVE TO BE LISTED ON YOUR NEXT TAX RETURN AND A FEE PAID TO OWN THEM, etc, etc. are received by me daily.
Who's doing this? Most of our citizens are hard working, honest people who simply do not have the time to research this stuff. Their "research" is done in the coffee shop on occasion, or at church, or at the Elk's club, etc., all of which are populated mostly by others with these same warped biases.
The uglies of all this is, of course, the more recent stuff being circulated and on placards, etc. that is now out in the open, chilling stuff like "We came to this Tea Party meeting Unarmed...THIS time!" In such a closed and uneducated state as Wyoming, this will----trust me--erupt in violence and, in fact, already has in various overt ways.
I'm going nowhere though...PHYSICALLY and, most likely, in my sometimes FORCED calm rebuttal of this warped stuff....and yes, I do have a concealed carry permit and I do have lots of firearms...some liberals are lovers of this type of sport too....and as Ortega de Gossett wrote , "I do not hunt to kill...I kill to have hunted."
You must be from Laramie. Anywhere in the rest of the state, you'd have have been lynched long ago...
Comment By Amable, 8-05-10FOR JAY---
Laramie? Well, no. As a matter of fact, I'm from the very Heart of Darkness itself....[sorry Joseph Conrad] . Cody.
Laramie is, in fact, where they do in actuality brutalize and murder folks for opposing beliefs and actions. Folks like Matthew Shepard. And then of course, there is the Bill Ayers incident. And the fact that Annie Proulx decided for personal safety reasons to move out of the state to and undisclosed location. She did, of course, write the short story upon which Brokeback Mountain was based. [none other than Larry McMurtry of Lonesome Dove fame wrote the screenplay, of course.].
And no, I'm not gay either. But I have friends who are...and yes, some DO LIVE---CAREFULLY---IN CODY!
Nice try anyway, Jay....
My hope in Idaho is that the Idaho Republicans keep pushing themselves so far to the Right that they become irrelevant to the regular folks in the state. One thing Idaho has going for it is the city of Boise. It is a fairly large and Liberal minded city that votes Democratic on most issues.
Comment By Mickey Garcia, 8-05-10Most of the rural western red states are subsidized by Uncle Sam and the mostly Democratic Blue Cities of the U.S. In 2005, for example, Idaho, for example, paid about 7.5 billions in federal taxes to Uncle Sam. In the same year Uncle Sam spent about 9.5 billion in Idaho and big agriculture in Idaho receives the largest share of those subsidies. Clearly, Western, Red, States are on Welfare being paid by Mostly Blue Democratic States. Nice racket. And oh, how they hate those big city liberals who are handing them the money.
Comment By Daryl L. Hunter, 8-11-1013.3 trillion dollars in debt and you libs think your policies are brilliant.
When this country can't borrow any more money to float their Ponzi scheme social programs and the economy collapses I will enjoy a perverse satisfaction watching you all looking at each other questioning - What Happened?
http://www.free-press.biz/usa/national-debt.htm
Over half of that debt was accumulated under Repulsican, supposedly conservative presidents.
Comment By Daryl L. Hunter, 8-17-10Mickey, I was pissed at Bush for his expansion of government also. The Department of Homeland Security should have never been created. The Prescription drug bill should have not been passed. Bush was wrong.
He is not nearly as wrong as the marxists that are spending my children's future at an unprecedented rate.
Mickey, just because Bush ran up the debt you think it is good for Obama to pour gasoline on the fire that is going to ruin our children?
Debt hysteria is in full bloom and politicians are making a lot of hay just before the midterms. Marxism, Communism, Socialism are just hysteria words. If you look at the history of the debt since about the 1960's you'll see that it wasn't just Bush. The National Debt has been accumulating over decades. The fix has to be a long term decline in government spending and an increase in upper income taxes. I believe Clinton was the last president to preside over a couple of years of non deficit spending. I personally don't like the idea of Uncle Sam paying billions of dollars a year in interest when the money could be put to a lot better use. But National debt reduction or elimination has to be a long term plan that we stick to. The National Debt has reached almost 60% of annual GDP and Total Government Spending including City, County, State and Federal is running at about 45% of annual GDP. A good start would be getting rid of about half the city councils and county commissions in the U.S.
Comment By Daryl L. Hunter, 8-17-10During clinton we had a $400 billion dollar budget surplus yet the national debt grew by $1.4 trillion dollars.
Mickey, it is the national government that is too big and running up the national debt, not the local ones.
ObamaCare is going to break the bank and our children are going to pay the price.
Obama agrees with Karl Marx on many things, maybe he isn't a marxist but he sure does admire them.
Total government spending for fy2010, about 6.5 Trillion Bucks. 54% of that was Federal spending and 46% was State and Local government spending. Don't worry about Karl Marx. He's dead. Worry about being snookered by Politicians who want trick you into voting for them instead of the other guy.
