Some Westerners Still Like Our Veep

There are just three states in the U.S. where a majority of residents now approve of the job being done by Vice President Dick Cheney -- and they’re all right here in the New West. According to the latest polling results from SurveyUSA, residents of Wyoming, Utah and Idaho are the only ones who still give Cheney an approval rating of more than 50%. The weighted average across the country of all respondents, surveyed November 11-13, is 34% approval and 61% disapproval. And while the group's latest national tracking of President Bush's job approval has not yet been updated this month, October's results mirror those of the Vice Presidential surveys.

According to SurveyUSA's November polls, approval of Cheney's performance was voiced by 55% in Wyoming, 51% in Utah, 50% in Idaho, 38% in both Colorado and Montana, and 35% in New Mexico. In the October surveys of Bush's performance, approval was 61% in Utah, 55% in Idaho, 54% in Wyoming, 49% in Montana, 42% in Colorado, and 39% in New Mexico. The national weighted average of those results was 38% approval and 59% disapproval.

All of these Western states, the surveys point out, supported the Bush-Cheney ticket in 2004.

is a national origanization that has conducted thousands of opinion polls for television stations around the country since 1992. It regularly amalgamates results on its website of national surveys such as those mentioned above. [End of article]

Let us not forget that Cheney, though he hasn't actually lived in Wyoming for years, enjoys favorite-son status there. A Wyoming native, he served six terms as the state's lone U.S. Representative,

A favorite son he is indeed, although not technically a native -- he was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and moved to Casper as a teenager.

It's said that the electorate deserves those whom it elects. I couldn't agree more.

However, Cheney lost his own county. He even lost his own precinct. We don't care for monarchies around here.

To Cheney, a draft-dodging chicken hawk who considers as patriots only those who agree with his morally corrupt policies, I offer the following Mark Twain quote: "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time and your government when it deserves it." What Cheney and Bush deserve is impeachment. In Arizona, only 35% of voters approve of the Bush/Cheney performance -- who would have thought that Arizona would be the most enlightened state in the West?
