One of the main reasons folks settle down in Rocky Mountain towns like Bozeman is for easy access to outdoor recreation. And in Bozeman, it appears, a majority of those folks choose to recreate in the company of their best friends, their faithful companions, their dogs.Dear Marjorie, So well done - as per usual of your writing. I was on the linear trail yesterday and watched a big golden running up and down on the other side of a fence while his owners - on the trial side - watched. He stopped in a back yard adjacent to the trail and left a BIG poop. I watched as the owners called him - and had to go over to the fence - down the way a bit - and let him out to resume his walk with them. I was preparing my greeting to them -bravely planning to give them my extra poop bag, when they got where I was. They knew I had been watching. I greeted them and told them a small bit about the meeting and gave them my extra bag. At that point the woman (of the pair) - thanked me for the bag and said - we live there and he always goes there. I laughed and asked for my bag back. They were a sweet young couple and we had a good laugh together.
Always love seeing you and reading your work.

Missoula is going through similar canine growing pains – after a pit bull incident, a flurry of letters to the editor criticized lax enforcement of leash laws. So fines were raised, and enforcement promised. We need creative solutions – another dog park (a nice one, not one that looks like its been cluster bombed) and perhaps an education campaign. I like the idea of license dollars going to poop bags. Thanks for the informative article.

I was at one point a college student here in Bozeman and know that there are a large number of irresponsible college students to be found. During my time as a college student I rented in several different areas over a period of 5 years and had run-ins with dog owners in every neighborhood I lived in. I had neighbors that allowed their dogs to roam the streets (and my yard) all day and all night. I even had a dog chase my cat right up to my front door and as the cat bolted between my legs and into the house, I hit the dog running behind it so hard that the poor thing did not get up for several minutes. The owner, also my neighbor and not a college student, offered no apologies for his dog's behavior and instead began yelling at me and promising to sue me for my actions. Obviously this ignorant person is the type of dog owner you are writing about, but I think it is far too easy, not to mention irresponsible, to point a finger at the college population which does not comprise more than 1/3 of Bozeman's population of which a small majority live off campus and rent apartments that will allow dogs. I believe that education will contribute much to solving this problem. But you should start with educated reporting in the first place instead of blaming a serious problem on the smallest population of contributors. You will add to your own credibility and gain the support of a much wider population, as many of Bozeman's current residents were once college students here as well.
Jinny,
Your comment made me go back and re-read my article since I posted it more than two months ago. I think if you were to reread it you would find that I am not blaming anything on anyone -- I was reporting on the comments made at one meeting, and only one comment referred to "proverbial irresponsible college students." The whole point of the meetings -- and my article -- was to get the attention of all dog owners. Now if dog owners comprise only 1/3 of Bozeman's population, then it's true, they're responsible for any problems that citizens experience with dogs.
