Timing is everything. I filled last week’s column (Please, Not Kempthorne) with wishful thinking and reasons why President Bush shouldn’t appoint Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne to replace the retiring Gale Norton as Secretary of the Interior. Well, a few hours after I posted it, the president officially appointed Kempthorne.Kempthorne hasn't been confirmed yet...
Chris at Liberal Idaho has posted about some movement to block confirmation and who to contact: http://www.leftyblogs.com/cgi-bin/go.cgi?http://www.liberalidaho.org/story/2006/3/23/11528/3121
I've posted some thoughts about Kempthorne's qualifications to oversee our interior at http://wehavefailed.blogspot.com/2006/03/whispers-of-kempthorne-why-not.html and how he does not represent the true "Westerner" at http://wehavefailed.blogspot.com/2006/03/what-is-westerner.html
I was not overly happy or concerned over The Honorable Dirk Kempthorn's appointment until I read your drivel. The "green" granola idiots who are really "red" communists don't like him?? HOORAY. Proves once again that the best President we've had since T. Roosevelt is on the right track.
CHill out, go read somemore Karl Marx.
CL,
I'm assuming by your post you believe that you have more knowledge and experience than the National Environmental Trust, Sierra Club, Cecil Andrus, Environmental Protection Agency, and the League of Conservation Voters. You may not agree with them or their methods but their goal is to prevent our country from being a polluted cesspool and wish to avoid our grandchildren having to clean up after our waste. If you don't like it, please consider moving to a country where you can fish in waters which contain floating waste, have your children contract deadly diseases from streams, and you don't ever have to see a blue sky again. You obviously don't appreciate camping and hunting and other natural recreation. So stick to your urban concrete jungle, drink your bottled water, and breath in your polluted air and leave the rest of us alone. Some of us appreciate the stars in the nighttime sky and want our children to be able to access public lands. If you don't want that, fine, but don't take it away from the rest of us. Calling names and being ignorant doesn't make your point...
Thanks Bill. Your concise and thoughtful commentary on this development is much appreciated. Thanks for the R.S. 2477 info. as well.
Comment By Dennis Desmond, 4-20-06I am a moderate Republican and an active duty service member recently returned from Iraq and I am HORRIFIED at how the current president is selling out our natural resources and destroying the environment.
It is NOT just a liberal cause to celebrate quality of life and want to protect our Nation's natural resources to include its wildlife and public lands.
The nomination of Kempthorne as the new interior secretary, considering his stance on the management of wolves, weakening the ESA, and opening up pristine lands to ORVs, is one more indictaion that Bush has no intention of protecting this country's natural resources.
I for one will work to stop Kempthorne's approval as interior secretary and will let my representatives know that I did not risk my life in the service of my country so that our current administration could squander it away from our children and grandchildren.
What a powerful statement, sir.
Thank you so very much for your service. I am very glad you made it home.
Well done!

I just don't have much to say right now. Pretty much nothing seems worth doing. My mind is like an empty room. I haven't gotten anything done these days. What can I say?
