The Smart Car, a tiny little munchkin that's been cruising the streets of Europe since 1998, is coming to America. German-American carmaker DaimlerChrysler will introduce the Smart Car to the American market in 2008 in the hopes that soaring gas prices, waning interest in SUVs and concerns about global warming will jumpstart its popularity here.Hi Kate
When I was in Paris in 2000, smart cars where everywhere. I was totally fascinated with the toy cars. They even were parking them on the sidewalks! I used half a roll of film taking pictures of them. I think they would work here, if we have 2 road systems...one for tiny cars and one for the 18 wheelers!otherwise, I am not sure I want to have one. BTW, your grandparents are fine. Visited with them yesterday.
I personally would not drive one of these outside of Bozeman very far. It would take time for drivers to get used to these small cars. It would make the blind spot accidents more likely. As previous comment noted, a 2 road system would make this a viable mode of transportation. How many roads would actually be able to be turned into 2 road systems? Two road systems are probably more feasible near large populated areas. Make it a toll road and let them drive faster. Hopefully trucking companies would make enough saving time to pay the tolls with side benefit of not having them mingling with small cars. I am not sure how to plan a 2 road system around here. An ideas out there? Maybe we need and Interstate II system designed for trucks and possibly with a toll system to pay for it. My $0.02 worth.
