Yoga On & Off the Mat

Brooke Hewes

This column explores the vast, dynamic practice of Yoga, including Hatha, Pranayama, and among many others, Karma Yoga. Whether or not a sticky mat is even involved, yoga’s spiritual, emotional and physical applications and influences are many. I invite you to reach, stretch your mind and share your thoughts.

Yoga, On and Off the Matt explores the dynamic practice of yoga as a salient form of ancient Hindu mysticism; as a spiritual journey; as a way of being with body, breath and mind; and, simply, as mindfulness. As the physical practice of yoga becomes increasingly ubiquitous in our society, it is both interesting and important to consider its roots and implications as much more than a mat-bound practice. Yoga is ancient; in the West, however, yoga is decidedly modern. And just as yoga blends old with new, it possesses the power and dynamism to affect all aspects of our life. Through a blend of personal essay, interviews, and reporting, I hope to stimulate conversation and broaden mainstream perceptions of yoga. These articles are meant to generate discussion, and not assert truth. Yoga is active, as a practice and idea, and the more sharing of thoughts and experiences, the better.
