winter in the rockies

Snowtography Contest Winners Announced

By NewWest.Net Editor, 3-31-08

Paring 235 Snowtography Contest photos down to the top 5 wasn't as difficult as, say, a crazy ski stunt in Glacier, but it wasn't easy either, because "capturing winter in the Rockies" can mean lots of things and all, as the entrants proved, can be captured artfully.

After much rumination we decided on the following five photos. We hope you like them as much as we do.

Many thanks to our contest sponsors, Edge of the Word and The Dark Room, two awesome Missoula businesses that offered up as prizes a snowboard and camera.

First Place

We judges call this photo "Doggles" but the photographer, Larry Walton, calls it "Cool." That sure is an adventurous-looking Border Collie. The photo was taken in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Enjoy your new Forum snowboard, Larry, courtesy of Edge of the World.

Second Place

Travis Adams of Whitefish, Montana, gets some big air at Logan Pass in Glacier National Park. Photo by Dave Erickson. Dave, nice work. Take more shots with your new Nikon digital camera from The Dark Room.

Third Place

This shot by Tim Leonhardt is titled "Bozeman Snowfall at Sunset." Tim, you win a $50 REI gift card.

Honorable Mention

Late on a cold, snowy day, this bull elk spends the afternoon grazing in the meadow. Photo by AJ Schroetlin in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. AJ, you've got some NewWest.Net schwag coming your way.

Honorable Mention

Coyote tracks headed for the mighty Mission Mountains. Photo by Christopher Cauble in Ninepipes National Wildlife Refuge, Montana. Christopher, you're getting some NewWest.Net schwag, too.

To all the entrants, thanks for playing, and stay tuned to NewWest.Net for another summer photo contest.
