The season is winding down. (Or up, depending on how you look at it.) The way I look at it, there are some wicked cool things happening in the Colorado and New Mexico ski mountains this weekend. Don’t pack up your gear quite yet.
New Snow: 5 inches in last 3 days
Base: 66 inches
Special events: April 5 and 6, “Zuma Blast Days” – for forty five bucks, hook up with an A-Basin pro and tour the new Montezuma Bowl terrain.
April 7, “Legends of Skiing” – today A-Basin offers a ski clinic for all of you geezers out there who still rip it up on the slopes. $55 for any skiers (sorry, no boarders) 50 years old and up.

Special Events: April 5 and 6, “End of Season Party” – As I mentioned a few weeks ago, this is the last chance for all ya’ll to have a few beers at Purgy’s before they close it down and turn it into a bunch of condos. You don’t want to miss this party. BBQ and drink specials, a bonfire, live music, and even a scavenger hunt will make this a night to tell your grandkids about someday. End your day a little early for a chance to grab a lawn chair on “Purgy’s Beach,” sit out in the sun with a few brews and a few friends.
New Snow: 1 inch in last 7 days
Base: 126 inches
Special Events: April 5, “College Day” – College students ski for a measly twenty seven bucks with valid photo ID!
April 6, “Local’s Appreciation Day” – Locals ski for twenty seven bucks! (No ID required.)
New Snow: nope
Base: 94 inches
Special Events: April 4 and 5, “Rider Improvement Clinic” – all you snowboarders out there who have been aching to try out Taos’ famous steeps, but the very thought makes your knees shake, this clinic is for you. Taught by Brian Olson and Randy Price of the AASI, this clinic will give you the confidence and skills you need to shred even the gnarliest terrain at Taos.
April 6, Closing Day, “Bud Light Pond Skimming Championships” – yeah, it’s what it sounds like. Skiers, snowboarders, and just plain crazy folks will use whatever means necessary to skim across an 80-foot-long pool of ice water. Watch from a safe, warm distance, or try it out yourself for a $10 entry fee.
