A Canadian Community’s Wind Farm Debate

By Kaylee Porter, 7-21-08

Last year a district in Alberta, Canada tried to create “wind development-free zone” along the base of the Rocky Mountains. This effort was unsuccessful, but according to a recent Great Falls Tribune article, the issue of restricting wind turbine placement has resurfaced in the rural Canadian town of Pincher Creek and the result of the battle could be of interest to northern Montana communities as more wind farms are constructed.

Pincher Creek residents in favor of the proposed bylaw changes want to restrict wind turbine placement because of how they mar the landscape. Landowners and wind developers, on the other hand, have met the proposed amendments with fierce resistance.

“They say the proposed new rules would not only put a damper on future development, but also unfairly restrict how private property owners could use their land,” Karl Puckett writes.

The proposed changes to Pincher Creek’s district bylaws involving wind turbines will be released for public review before summer’s end.
