Desperate Housewife Supports Obama

By Rebecca Powell, 10-05-08

We gathered with fellow Las Crucens and students to see, hear, and ogle Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives fame and Adam Rodriguez of CSI: Miami as they expressed their support for Barack Obama outside New Mexico State University’s Corbett Center. Braving a rare New Mexico rain, we listened to Obamified music as we waited for the rally to begin. Strains of Bob Marley and Queen became vehicles for Obama chants. The husband danced the boy because, well, how else do you entertain a two-year-old at a political rally?

Admittedly, the draw was the stars, but local politicians spoke more persuasively and convincingly. Bill McCamley, current county commissioner and former candidate for New Mexico’s District 2 US House of Representatives seat, roused the crowd, stressed the importance of the election, and made me hope we will see him on a ballot in the near future. State Representative Joseph Cervantes got a good laugh as he sniped at Sarah Palin, implying she was the desperate housewife of the Republican party. A few McCain protesters flashed signs and booed a few times.

The Obama campaign has sent a long list of emissaries to Las Cruces: Kansan Governor, Kathleen Sebelius; wife, Michelle Obama; New Mexico Lieutenant Governor, Diane Denish; but we have yet to see Obama. He held an invitation only gathering at New Mexico Farm and Ranch on Memorial Day, but has yet to appear at a public event. Polls show Obama winning New Mexico, a swing state, but pundits say he cannot hold the state without Southern New Mexico.
