Guide John Havlik with a nice rainbow on the Tarkio to Superior stretch.

The Tarkio to Superior stretch was another spectacular day of fishing .  We fished dries all day and loved it.  In our boat, John and I hosted writer Brian Kevin, who’s managed to witness the 320 on each stretch of the river– the upper, middle, and lower.  In the other boat, guide John Gould had clients Craig Perkins and Tom Wozniak.  We had a nice canyon stretch.  When we started off, we spotted Montana FWP folks out on the water shocking fish from Tarkio to Forest Grove.  They said they weren’t seeing as many as they’d hoped, but that it wasn’t bad.  We had some more weird weather for July– cool and cloudy, with rain on and off.

We took out at Superior, which has a pretty sweet wastewater treatment system that the Coalition staff filled me in on.  Instead of dumping in the river, the town puts its “effluent” (that’s a nice word for you-know-what) into a nearby forest with sprinklers.  It’s called a “land application” of wastewater.  Superior has also been in the local news lately for a potential Superfund designation.  Mining waste has left some tributaries pretty damaged up around there, and the town and EPA are looking for the best solution.

All this info is pretty neat stuff for a finance guy like me.  Seriously– I think everyone ought to get out and float a few days on the Clark Fork.  Believe me– you’ll see a few things.

Talk to you tomorrow,

Daniel Kiely
