Duke City Shootout Taps Albuquerque Screenwriters
By Emily Esterson , 6-16-06
The countdown has begun for that crazy annual festival, the Duke City Shootout that sends seven film crews out and about New Mexico for one week to shoot a short film. Word comes from the festival's public relations office that the seven scripts have been chosen and among them are two Albuquerque filmmakers.
Here's the official list:
MAKLAR, ANYONE? (sci-fi comedy)
Angela and Phil Guzzo, Milwaukie, OR
CONFESSION (drama)
Lauren Schneider, New York, NY
TALK ME TO DEATH (comedy)
Pamela K. Johnson, Long Beach, CA
THE KISS (drama)
Chidiki Whitley, Indian Head, MD
UNDER MY SKIN (horror)
Stanley Ray, Albuquerque, NM
EDDY RAY (sci-fi)
D'Artagnan (Dart) Hardiman, Albuquerque, NM
DOG DAY (comedy)
Joachim Jung, Los Angeles, CA
Film columnist for Albuquerque the Magazine and film-man-about-town Gene Grant told me yesterday that it looks as if scriptwriters submitting to the festival have finally gotten over the notion that just because the Duke City Shootout takes place in Albuquerque doesn't mean your story has to include cactus, cowboys or other "westernalia." This year's themes in the record number of submitted scripts included dogs and senior citizens, among other things. The festival takes place July 21-29 in Albuquerque.
