Montana could net 6,335 jobs as part of a $100 billion national green economic recovery program proposed in a report released Tuesday by the Center for American Progress.
The report, titled Green Recovery: A Program to Create Good Jobs and Start Building a Low-Carbon Economy, details “how to expand job opportunities by stimulating economic growth, stabilizing the price of oil, and making significant strides toward fighting global warming and building a green, low-carbon economy.” Funding mechanisms include $50 billion for tax credits, $46 billion in direct government spending, and $4 billion for federal loan guarantees.
Here’s the breakdown of how it would affect Montana (click here for the fact sheet and here for links to every state’s):
- Montana’s share of national green economic recovery program: $279 million, based on combining state’s population and gross domestic product.
- Montana’s net job creation through green economic recovery program: 6,335 jobs, based on Montana unemployment figures in June 2008.
- Impact on Montana’s labor market: a net increase of 6,335 jobs would reduce Montana’s unemployment rate to 2.9 percent in two years from 4.1 percent in June 2008.
Written by economists from the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, the economic recovery program could create, according to the report, about 2 million new jobs within the U.S. economy over two years, while stabilizing the price of oil and helping to jumpstart a wide range of new investment initiatives that can effectively fight global warming and build a clean energy economy in the United States.
