THE SCARIEST THING THAT HAPPENED ON HALLOWEEN

Gun Lobby Attack Dogs Strike Again

What kind of people suffer no remorse when intentionally destroying one of their own, his company and his employees to make their point?

Editor’s Note: Links to three updates at the end of the story.--Bill Schneider

Something extremely scary happened last Friday on Halloween. Dan Cooper, President and Founder of Cooper Firearms of Stevensville, Montana, resigned.

Not so scary, you say. Well, wait until you hear why. If you believe in freedom and that there’s a reason why the right to free speech is the First Amendment, prepare to be terrified.

The uproar erupted on October 28 when USA TODAY published an article interviewing Cooper.  In the story, he said he has voted Republican most of his life, but this year, he’s voting for (and making campaign contributions to) Barrack Obama. Cooper thinks the gun lobby’s relentless attacks on the Democratic nominee are unfounded and inaccurate, and that Obama won’t pursue gun control legislation. “He is a stanch supporter of the right to hunt and the right to bear arms.”

Cooper also said other issues like the wars in the Middle East are more important to him this year than gun issues, and he agrees with Obama’s “retooling of America” message, especially “the building of middle-class jobs and helping American small business be competitive with those overseas.”

He also said the Republican Party has moved too far to the right.

Now, Cooper probably wishes he’d been out chasing elk when USA TODAY called because immediately after the article appeared, the blogsphere went nuclear, starting with 2,713 comments on the original story and followed by the same on dozens of gun blogs and websites. Fresh from their decisive slap down of outdoor writer Jim Zumbo last year, the most vocal and vicious segment of the gun lobby decided to make another example out of Dan Cooper.

Two days later, with hundreds of emails stacking up in the Cooper Firearms inbox, the Board of Directors asked Dan Cooper to resign to save the company and its 38 employees. Several blogs had snatched Cooper’s dealer list from its website, posted it, and urged fellow gun activists to contact the dealers and threaten a boycott if they didn’t stop selling Cooper Firearms rifles.

Cooper Firearms took the dealer list off its website, but too late. The damage was done. Retailers, including the small company’s two biggest accounts, Cabela’s and Sportsman Warehouse, acting as if Democrats never shopped in their stores, instantly caved into the pressure from gun fanatics and called Cooper Firearms to cancel their orders.

The Internet is a wonderful thing, of course, and a lot of people, like myself, make a living because of it, but in this case, it became a conduit for unbridled rage and vengeance and could end up destroying a good man, a lifelong hunter and supporter of the Second Amendment. But it doesn’t stop there. The attack dogs are also intentionally--and effectively--destroying an entire company and sending its employees to the unemployment lines, people who probably voted for John McCain.

To make sure you don’t think I’m exaggerating the situation, I spent several hours reading the postings and comments. To spare you this frightening experience, I took the liberty of plucking out snippets of the bitterness so you understand the extent of vitriol and vindictiveness a gun owner faces if he dares disagree with the extremists. Keep in mind that these are all anonymous comments, because I doubt these people could bear the guilt of using their real names to spew out such poison. Take deep breath and make sure the children are out of the room before reading on.

  • “Did a bona-fide firearms manufacturer actually donate money to Obama? Really? Does the man have a case of lead encephalopathy or something?”

  • “I wouldn’t want the profit he collects off of any purchase I make from him to then be turned in to a campaign contribution for Barack Obama. I would hazard a guess that most other gun owners are with me on that…If the truth hurts his business, so be it.”

  • “Sportsman’s Warehouse and Cabela’s seem to be the 2 big chain stores that stock Coopers. The idea here is not to boycott these stores, it is to persuade them to reconsider their business relationship with Cooper, and boycott them if they don’t.”

  • “Remember also that gun owners that go against the grain can end up as useful idiots for the left. Carl Levin used Zumbo’s comments to call for the reauthorization of the AWB (Assault Weapon Ban). I’m not saying Cooper’s support of Obama will lead to anything like that but I’d rather not take the chance.”

  • “If you are the CEO of a company that makes guns why would you support one of the most anti-gun candidates in U.S. history? So he could be closed down last?”

  • “I will be composing specific letters to Sportsman’s Warehouse and Cabela’s to remind them of the business that I do with them and to encourage them to drop the Cooper line from their stores.”

  • “Montana is becoming more and more Californicated every day. Enjoy your democrat-socialist hellhole like we do here in Michigan.”

  • “Obama is and will stay an enemy of gun owners and gun companies. Free speech can come back to bite you in the ass if you are not careful. If I were a higher-up at a gun company and I supported Obama I think I would be smart enough to STFU.”

  • “This guy needs to be crushed as an example to others.”

  • “There is no way that he is not still involved and making money from the company. Cooper needs to get run out of business. Then they will get the message.”

  • “I’m not buying the press release from Clan Cooper. Too little, too late. Cooper, you’ve just been Zumboed.”

  • “They saw a Zumbo screw up on the horizon and wanted to head it off. Damn, I googled it and it is being posted on every gunsite out there not to buy Cooper rifles. They are toast.”

  • “It’s just a family owned business trying to protect the family jewels.”

  • “Stay active. Keep contacting dealers. Let them all know the kind of person we’re dealing with in Cooper. Supports Obama, lies about it and then tries to pull the wool over our eyes.”

  • “Gotta let the dealers know this bullshit won’t wash. Cooper Firearms needs to be shut down.”

  • “You don’t join PETA if you own a mink coat company.”

  • “Keep up the pressure folks & don’t believe the hype...,Cooper Arms is unrepentant, arrogant, and needs to be bitch slapped HARD!”

  • “Dan Hussein Cooper has added new ‘Hope’ and ‘Change’ non-operating firearm models to his lineup. These finely-crafted replicas preserve the 2nd Amendment while eliminating risk to orphans and animals. The special ‘Brady Coalition Limited Edition’ model will be released on Inauguration day, 2009.”

  • “After a few of these episodes they will preemptively keep their yaps shut. Zumbo, Cooper…it may take a few more, but sooner or later they’ll catch on. If they want a job where they can choke on liberal bagooda, let them take up broadcasting/journalism.”

  • “Cooper Firearms needs to be shut down.... period. This resignation request is just more BS from Dapper Dan who thinks we gun owners are just a bunch of ignorant hicks. Don’t fall for it. Keep the pressure up on Cooper’s distributors. Run this clown out of the gun business permanently.”

  • “They lied to us, blatantly, with their first response. I now wouldn’t trust them if they burned him to the stake.”

That’s only a small sampling. If you want more, go to Google Blog Search and search for that famous “traitor” Dan Cooper.

Incidentally, the same Internet gang also called me a “traitor” because I wrote about the American Hunters and Shooter Association (AHSA), which is, regardless of the repeated falsehoods circulated by the same gun activists, a pro-hunting, pro-gun alternative to the National Rifle Association (NRA) and actually tries to represent both hunters and gun owners.

This last weekend, I emailed back and forth with Dan Cooper hoping he could give me some of his thoughts for this column, but right now, he’s hunkered down waiting for things to “calm down” before releasing another statement later this week.

Knowing, I hope, that he has some--but not enough--support, most notably Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer who interrupted an elk hunting trip to call Cooper on October 30 and offer his assistance. Schweitzer, a Democrat and Obama supporter, said he would help Cooper Firearms in their sales promotions. “I will go to vendors. I will go state to state. I will help you sell the firearms, if you think the governor of Montana can help you close some deals.”

Ray Schoenke, AHSA President, also came to Cooper’s defense. “I know first-hand that gun owners are voting for Obama,” he said in a press release. “They know their gun rights are secure. And they want a president who won’t take their guns AND will focus on the economy and their jobs. It’s beyond appalling that hard-core gun activists would destroy the economic livelihood of a guy like Dan Cooper. John McCain should be ashamed that his supporters have harmed a small business owner for political reasons. That should never happen in the America.

“Last year we witnessed what happened to prominent outdoor writer and commentator Jim Zumbo when he dared take a position contrary to NRA policy,” Schoenke continued. “Now they are trying to do the same to Dan Cooper. Gun owners who have no political ax to grind need to stand up, reject such underhanded tactics and have their voices heard. That’s why AHSA was formed, to end this partisan bullying and to restore pride to the shooting sports. This action against Cooper reinforces my commitment to making change happen by electing Obama--and by building an organization for hunters and shooters who are tired of extremism.”

From my perspective, it’s a downright shame gun zealots can be so amazingly mean-spirited as to intentionally destroy a good man, his company, and his employees, with no remorse, just to make a point. It’s equally shameful that Sportsman Warehouse, Cabela’s and other gun dealers so quickly yield to pressure from extremists instead of standing by a long-time, loyal vendor.

And where are the vast majority of gun owners who aren’t interested in “crushing” people who disagree with them? Why aren’t they emailing and calling to Cabela’s and Sportsman Warehouse supporting Dan Cooper’s First Amendment rights and urging them to continue carrying Cooper Firearms products?

Now we know why politicians won’t push for gun control. They’re terrified of these gun extremists and their new weapon of mass destruction, the Internet. Who can blame them?  How incredibly sad it is, but the gun lobby’s attack dog strategy works--because we let it work.
