Schools in the Rocky Mountain West snagged four of the eight slots in a new list of the best American colleges for winter enthusiasts compiled by U.S. News & World Report.

The list steers students looking for a place to combine higher education with skiing or snowboarding toward these schools in the Rockies:

  • The University of Montana in Missoula for offering “dogsled races, downhill and cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling all within a short distance of the campus,” and also for Missoula’s New Year’s Eve festivities.

  • The University of Colorado in Boulder for its access to “world-class ski and snowboarding resorts.”

  • The University of Utah in Salt Lake City for being located within 40 minutes of seven ski resorts and for receiving “hundreds of inches of dry snow a year.”

  • The University of Wyoming in Laramie for its proximity to two nearby Wyoming ski hills as well as several slopes in Colorado.

Sierra Nevada College near Lake Tahoe also earned a spot on the list. Three New England schools also won recognition: Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.; Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt.; and Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.

What other schools in the Rockies deserve a place on the list? Are Boise State, Colorado State and Brigham Young University worthy destinations for snow lovers? Add your suggestion in the comment section below.
