McCain Blasts Farm Bill, Clinton Blasts McCain for Blasting Farm Bill

By Courtney Lowery, 5-19-08

Sen. John McCain and Sen. Hillary Clinton are using the almost $300 billion Farm Bill passed last week in Congress as the presidential volley of the day, highlighting renewed national attention on the rural vote.

McCain this morning said the legislation is “stuffed ... with hundreds of pages of subsidies and tax breaks” and that if he were in the president’s position, he would veto it too.

Clinton, stumping in South Dakota, which with Montana will hold the final Democratic primary June 3, told the crowd: “I believe saying no to the farm bill is saying no to rural America.”

President Bush, who has threatened to veto the legislation, over the weekend extended the current farm bill to keep the Department of Agriculture running for another week while the new bill gets sorted out.

Volleying aside, the best Farm Bill reading of the day comes from the Christian Science Monitor, where Gail Russell Chaddock takes a look at how the legislation is spotlighting how our country looks at rich and poor.
