Montana Brewing of Billings scored big at what’s considered “the most prestigious beer competition in the world,” the World Beer Cup held April 19 in San Diego.
World Beer Cup 2008 winners were selected by an international panel of 129 beer judges from 21 countries. A massive field of 2,864 entries from 644 breweries in 58 countries made up the competition. More than 3,800 breweries in 100 countries were invited to compete.
The small brewery that specializes in “Montana-inspired beers” won a silver medal in the American Pale Ale beer style category for Sharptail Pale Ale and bronze medals in the English Summer Ale beer style category for Sandbagger Gold and in the Herb and Spice beer style category for its Stillwater Rye.
“These are the first World Beer Cup medals I have won and the brewery hasn’t won a medal at the World Beer Cup since 2000,” head brewer Travis Zeilstra noted. “To win medals at the World Beer Cup is very rewarding and competitive. We have won awards consistently on national level but now we are considered one of the best breweries in the world today.”
