Obama Draws Even with McCain in Montana

By Matthew Frank, 11-03-08

A day before Election Day, a new poll (PDF) shows that Barack Obama has a slight lead over John McCain in Montana, 48 percent to 47 percent, with Ron Paul—who beat McCain in the primary here—taking 4 percent.

According to the poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, Obama holds a 61-35 lead with those who have already voted, while McCain is up 53-40 with people who plan to vote on Election Day.

As of Sunday, 175,054 absentee ballots had already been turned in, according to the Montana Secretary of State’s Office, about 38 percent of the turnout in 2004. (In Montana, anyone can vote absentee, and early voting is counted as such.)

The poll shows Obama up 54-41 with voters under the age of 30.

“I’m not sure anyone expected Montana to be one of the races the nation would be watching on election night,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “But strong support from independents and young people could allow Barack Obama to pull off a big upset in the state.”
