Rabies in Your Local Music Scene?
By Sara Martin, Guest Writer, 7-25-07
After much deliberation, I, Sara of the Cactus Records, have decided that the death of the music industry can easily be equated to that of Old Yeller.
Imagine this with me for a moment please:
A stray dog shows up and causes some trouble. A young boy becomes friends with the pooch and he’s allowed to stick around the ol’ homestead. Soon enough the dog proves his worth, after saving the young kid’s bum a few times.
Then, the dog gets rabies from a wolf and the boy who’d befriended the dog has to off him.
Ok, now imagine this:
A small indie record store shows up, with a bunch of “alternate lifestyle” employees running it. The community becomes fond of these people, and lets them stick around.
Soon enough, the employees become saviors, with suggestions for gift ideas, music that touches the soul, and then some. People around the city (and even the country) adore the employees and the store they work in, praising it with “Best of’s” and so on and so forth.
Then, despite the sunshine of the fair homestead, the big bad wolf (corporate everything, included but not limited to internet downloads and box stores), shows up and bites the bejeezus out of the indie store, giving it rabies. Soon, the community is forced to shoot the indie record store so it doesn’t give other stores rabies.
That might be far-fetched, but it’s pretty close. The community didn’t necessarily know it was shooting the little guy, and the employees didn’t have rabies.
Point being: Support local music scenes!
