The Denver Post is reporting this morning that Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO) is now the leading candidate for Secretary of the Interior. If so, he has bypassed early leaders Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) and Interior Deputy Secretary John Berry.
The Post also reports that Congressman John Salazar (D-CO.), Ken’s older brother, has been on the short list for Secretary of Agriculture, but now he is more likely to be appointed to his brother’s job in the U.S. Senate by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, also a Democrat.
Ken Salazar is a former director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, where he wrote the Great Outdoors Colorado Amendment that used lottery proceeds for land conservation. He serves on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
He is also a co-sponsor of Baucus-Crapo bill, S. 2438, the Fee Repeal and Expanded Access Act, which would repeal the Federal Lands Recreational Enhancement Act, the law that allows federal agencies to charge for entering and using federal lands.
Salazar didn’t respond to the Post’s inquiries, but he has unexpectedly canceled all events for Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
