University of Utah Gun Lawsuit Dismissed

A federal lawsuit to keep guns off the University of Utah campus has been dismissed. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that U.S. District Judge Dale A. Kimball ruled on the case Wednesday after both the U and the Utah Attorney General’s office requested the litigation be sacked.
University of Utah President Michael young agreed to drop the suit after Gov. John Huntsman signed legislation earlier this week that would allow U students to request non-gun-toting roommates. The legislation – a supposed compromise between pro-gun advocates and education officials will allow guns on campus and inside the classroom and professor’s offices.
University officials have been struggling to maintain their campus-wide ban on guns since 2004 when the law was altered, allowing permit holders to carry their guns to school despite the U’s prohibition. The U sued over the law, but lost its case in the Utah Supreme Court.
