AP Gives the Numbers

U.S. Population Rises to Almost 300 Million Fueled By Immigration

As of midday Sunday, there were 299,061,199 people in the United States of America, according to the Census Bureau's population clock which estimates on annual numbers for births, deaths and immigration. The AP reports that by this fall, the U.S. population will hit 300 million, fueled by immigration.

About one in eight people in the country are estimated to be immigrants, for a total number of around 36 million. That's a jump from back in 1967 when White non-Hispanics made up about 83% of the national population.

The best part of the AP article was the mini-recount of the salsa-ketchup battles of the 1990s. When salsa surpassed ketchup in U.S. sales for the first time, it "[pitted] the two in a seasaw battle for supremacy ever since."
