Wyoming has stepped in as a defendant in the lawsuit seeking to reverse the wolf delisting. Montana and Idaho might, too.
In documents filed Friday, Wyoming argues that the request to relist wolves is based on unproven beliefs and conjecture, rather than sound science, in an “attempt to convince this Court that the wolf population (in the Northern Rockies) might be in peril at some unspecified time in the future,” Chris Merrill of the Casper Star-Tribune reports.
At least 40 wolves have been killed in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana since the contentious canine lost Endangered Species Act protections in March.
Last week, U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy rejected the government’s request to delay a lawsuit aiming to place the wolf back on the endangered species list, saying he’s “unwilling to risk more deaths.” The injunction hearing is set for May 29 in Missoula.
